In Reply to @mholt6 @mholt6 Tldr: acidity of water needs to be at a certain level for chlorine to do its stuff. You get a testing kit and a set of chems that are ph+ and ph- then measure (kit comes with indicator) and up/down ph until in range. Then, if necessary you add chlorine

In Reply to @mholt6 @mholt6 I have used solar ionizer buoys, seem to work (expensive but lasts ages). In any case, if you smell like chlorine you might need to better balance your pools ph (so it requires less chlorine) and ensure chemicals are added overnight.
